Deliverect vs Flipdish: Which Restaurant Technology Platform Is Better?

Deliverect vs Flipdish: What's the Difference?

Deliverect and Flipdish get compared a lot, but they don't do the same job. Deliverect is middleware. It takes orders from third-party marketplaces like Just Eat, Uber Eats and Deliveroo and pushes them into the POS you already have. Flipdish builds your own ordering channels - a website, an app, kiosks - and runs them on its own POS and kitchen system.

So the real question is what you're trying to fix. If the problem is that marketplace orders are a mess to handle, Deliverect deals with that. If the problem is that marketplaces take too big a cut and you want more customers ordering from you directly, that's what Flipdish is for.

For most restaurant groups, it's the second problem. That's why we'd point most of them towards Flipdish.

What Is Deliverect?

Deliverect connects delivery marketplaces to a restaurant's POS. An order placed on Uber Eats lands in the kitchen without anyone having to read it off a tablet and type it into the till again.

On top of that it does a few other things:

  • keeps menus in sync across the marketplaces
  • gives you some basic reporting on marketplace order volumes
  • offers a direct ordering option through a product called Webshop

The main reason people buy it is the tablets. A busy site can end up with four or five of them on the counter, each beeping at a different moment. Deliverect gets rid of most of that.

What it doesn't do is replace your POS. It doesn't give you a brand customers order from, and you still pay the marketplace commission on every order that comes through it.

What Is Flipdish?

Flipdish is a full technology setup for restaurants. It includes:

The idea is that more of your customers order from you directly and fewer come through a marketplace. Flipdish also covers the operational kit you'd otherwise buy from three or four different suppliers.

Marketplace Aggregation: Deliverect vs Flipdish

Deliverect's main feature is pulling every marketplace into one feed. Say you're running Just Eat, Uber Eats and Deliveroo, each on its own tablet. With Deliverect, those orders all show up on one screen and go straight into the POS. Staff stop copying orders by hand, and fewer of them get lost or keyed in wrong.

That's a real improvement for a busy kitchen. It just doesn't touch the commission. Every one of those orders still costs you the same percentage it did before. You also still need the marketplaces, because they're where your delivery customers are.

Flipdish connects to marketplaces too. The difference is what it's trying to do with your business over time. Flipdish wants the share of orders coming through your own website and app to grow, so that a smaller slice of revenue goes to marketplace commission each month.

Put simply, Deliverect makes your marketplace orders easier to handle. Flipdish gives you your own way to take orders.

Direct Ordering

This is where the two are furthest apart.

Deliverect has Webshop, which lets customers order directly. It's a basic product, it isn't what Deliverect is built around, and there's no branded mobile app.

Direct ordering is the whole point of Flipdish's ordering platform. Customers order on your website or in your own app. You get the customer data, which means you can email or message those customers yourself. And there's no per-order commission.

The money adds up fast. A £20 direct order brings in about the same as a £26-£28 marketplace order once commission comes off. If a decent chunk of your delivery business moves to direct, you're keeping a lot more of each order. That's a margin difference, not a branding exercise.

POS and Kitchen Operations

Deliverect doesn't sell a POS. It plugs into whichever one you've got. That's fine as long as you're happy with your POS, but Deliverect only works through it. If you ditch the POS, you have to check Deliverect will still talk to whatever replaces it.

Flipdish has its own restaurant POS, and every channel feeds into it: online, counter and kiosk. Every order then shows up on the same Kitchen Display System, so the kitchen works from one screen instead of a printer, a tablet and someone shouting. Order management happens in one place too.

For a group with lots of sites, this matters more. Every location runs the same POS. New staff get trained on one system, you deal with one support team, and the reports look the same wherever they come from. With Deliverect you've got two suppliers at every site: the POS company and Deliverect sitting on top of it. When something breaks, it isn't always obvious which one to ring.

AI and Customer Engagement

Deliverect is about getting orders to the right place. It doesn't include tools for marketing to customers or getting them to order again.

Flipdish's AI tools cover two areas.

The AI Phone Agent picks up the phone and takes the order, and it answers the usual questions about opening hours and whether you deliver to a given area. Fewer calls go unanswered at 7pm on a Friday. If you take a lot of phone orders, you don't need someone tied to the phone all evening.

AI Marketing looks at ordering history, finds customers who haven't ordered in a while and sends them campaigns automatically. It can also aim promotions at particular groups of customers based on what they've ordered before.

This is about bringing money in, not just saving staff time. If a campaign gets 5% of lapsed customers ordering again, you can see exactly what it brought in. Deliverect has nothing like it.

Multi-Location and Enterprise

Both platforms handle multiple sites, but they mean different things by it.

With Deliverect, multi-location mostly means menus. Change a price or drop an item and it updates across all your marketplace listings at every site.

With Flipdish it covers everything: menus, POS settings, reporting, loyalty and marketing, all managed centrally across every site. There are also franchise management tools for groups that run on a franchise model, which Deliverect doesn't offer.

At 20 or more locations, the difference gets hard to ignore. Deliverect handles one layer of the operation. Flipdish handles most of it.

Pricing

Neither company publishes prices. Deliverect charges a monthly fee per location, and it goes up with the number of marketplace channels you connect. Flipdish quotes each customer individually, based on which products you need and how many sites you have.

Comparing the two platform fees on their own doesn't tell you much, though. Look at what you're paying overall.

With Deliverect, you pay the platform fee and you keep paying marketplace commission on every order, because the orders still come through the marketplaces.

With Flipdish, you pay the platform fee and the hardware cost for POS terminals and kiosks. Commission on direct orders is minimal or zero.

Flipdish works out better the more direct orders you take. A group that moves 40% of its delivery orders to direct saves a lot in commission, and Deliverect can't help with that because it was never designed to.

When Does Deliverect Make Sense?

Deliverect is a good fit if:

  • you get a lot of marketplace orders and the tablets are causing chaos in the kitchen
  • you plan to stay on the marketplaces long term and just want the orders to run more smoothly
  • you already have a POS you like and aren't changing it

It won't help you build direct ordering. You won't own your customer data either, and you'll be just as dependent on the marketplaces as before.

When Does Flipdish Make Sense?

Flipdish fits better if you want more customers ordering from you directly and fewer through the marketplaces. It also makes sense if you need one POS that handles online, kiosk and counter orders together, or if you run several sites and want to manage them all from one place.

It's also the one to look at if you want AI tools that bring in sales rather than just cutting admin, and if you care about building up a customer list you can keep marketing to.

The Verdict: Flipdish for Restaurant Groups Wanting to Grow

Deliverect is a good tool if you're already committed to the marketplaces and just need the orders to stop being a headache. It does that job well.

The bigger problem for most UK and Irish restaurants is how much of their revenue goes on marketplace commission, and Deliverect doesn't change that. The orders still come through Just Eat, Uber Eats and Deliveroo, and you still pay them for every one.

Flipdish gives you somewhere else for those orders to go. You get your own ordering channels, a POS, AI tools and customer marketing all from one supplier, which lets you shift more orders to direct and keep more of the money from each one.

If you want to own more of your revenue and your customer relationships, Flipdish is the better choice.
