Hungrrr vs Flipdish: Which Restaurant Ordering Platform Is Better?

The short answer

If you run a restaurant or takeaway and want ordering, POS, kiosks and marketing in one system, pick Flipdish. If you run a pub or hotel, already have a POS you're happy with, and just want a branded ordering front-end on top of it, Hungrrr can do that job.

Most of the gap between them comes down to one thing. Hungrrr takes the order. Flipdish takes the order and then also runs the till, the kitchen screen, the kiosk and the follow-up email to the customer who hasn't been back in two months.

What Hungrrr is

Hungrrr is a UK hospitality tech company. It sells white-label ordering to restaurants, hotels and leisure venues: a branded ordering website, iOS and Android apps, QR ordering for tables and a basic loyalty scheme.

It doesn't make a POS. Its customers are mostly independent venues and smaller groups, and its integrations list is shorter than you'd get from a platform that covers the whole stack. That's fine if all you want is a nicer way for customers to order. It becomes a problem when you want the order to go somewhere useful without help.

What Flipdish is

Flipdish sells restaurant technology to restaurants, takeaways, cafés, QSRs and multi-site groups in the UK, Ireland and further afield. The product list is longer:

All of that runs off one system. An order placed on the app, at the kiosk or at the counter ends up in the same place.

Online ordering

On the basic job, the two are close. Both give you a branded ordering site, both keep the customer data with you instead of with Just Eat or Deliveroo, and neither charges marketplace commission on those orders.

The difference shows up after the customer presses "pay". With Flipdish online ordering, the order goes straight to the kitchen display and the POS. Nobody types it in again. With Hungrrr, the order has to travel through a third-party POS integration, so you've got a second setup to configure, a second support desk to ring and one more thing that can break on a Saturday night.

For a single restaurant taking a few dozen web orders a night, Hungrrr will cope. Once you've got several sites, orders coming in from four or five channels and a kitchen that needs to see all of them on one screen, the extra integration starts costing you time every week.

Mobile apps

Both companies will build you white-label apps for iOS and Android. Your logo, your name in the App Store, customers ordering from you directly.

Flipdish's branded mobile apps come with push notifications, customer segments and automated loyalty built in. So a restaurant can send an offer to everyone who hasn't ordered in 60 days, from the same dashboard it uses to change the menu. No Mailchimp account, no CSV exports.

Hungrrr's apps do loyalty too, but it's a simpler scheme and there isn't much in the way of automated marketing sitting behind it.

POS and the kitchen

This is the biggest difference between them, and it isn't close.

Hungrrr doesn't sell a POS. If you order through Hungrrr, you need a POS from someone else plus an integration to get orders into your kitchen. Two vendors. Two contracts. Two places for things to go wrong. And when an order goes missing, you'll spend the evening on the phone while each vendor tells you it's the other one's fault.

Flipdish sells the POS, the Kitchen Display System and the order management as one product. Web orders, kiosk orders and counter orders land on the same kitchen screen, in the order they need cooking. There's nothing to reconcile at the end of the night because there's only one set of numbers.

Picture 7.30pm on a Friday. The counter is three deep, the app is pinging and a driver is waiting for a bag. A kitchen working off one screen just cooks. A kitchen working off a tablet, a printer and a POS that half-syncs with the ordering system spends that hour shouting.

Kiosks

QSRs and fast-casual restaurants use Flipdish's self-service kiosks to shorten the queue at the counter and get people adding more to their order. A kiosk order goes into the same kitchen display and the same reports as everything else, so it doesn't need its own process.

Kiosks tend to push average order value up, and the reasons are pretty mundane. People take longer over the menu when there's nobody behind them tutting. The upsell prompt ("add fries?") appears on every single order, not just when a member of staff remembers to ask. And nobody's embarrassed to add a second dessert to a screen.

Hungrrr doesn't have a kiosk product that matches this.

AI

Flipdish has built an AI platform with two parts that matter for most restaurants.

The first is the AI Phone Agent. It answers incoming calls, takes orders and deals with the usual questions, like what time you close or whether there's gluten in the batter. Plenty of takeaways still get a big chunk of their orders by phone, and on a busy night those calls either pull someone off the line or go unanswered. A missed call on a Friday is usually a missed order.

The second is AI Marketing. It looks at what customers actually order and how often, spots the ones who've stopped coming back and sends them something to bring them in again. It splits customers by spend, frequency and what they like to order, so the person who gets a large pepperoni every Thursday doesn't get the same message as someone who ordered once in March.

Hungrrr doesn't do AI phone ordering or AI marketing. If you want software that goes out and gets you more orders, not just processes the ones that arrive, only Flipdish offers that here.

Multiple sites and franchises

Hungrrr was built for independent venues first. It can handle more than one site, but there isn't much depth for franchises, larger restaurant groups or anyone who wants to run things from head office.

Flipdish is used by some of the biggest QSR and casual dining groups in the UK and Ireland. For them, it handles:

  • one menu managed centrally and pushed to every site
  • different prices or settings at individual sites where needed
  • reporting across all locations in one place
  • franchise management

The menu point is the one people underestimate. Say you're a franchise with 50 sites and you change the price of a burger meal. On Flipdish you change it once. On a system without proper central menu management, someone changes it 50 times, gets it wrong at three of them, and you find out when the complaints arrive.

If you've got five or more sites now, or expect to, this section on its own probably settles it.

Pricing

Neither company publishes prices. Both quote you based on how many sites you have, how many orders you do and which products you take.

When you get the quotes, look past the headline monthly fee. Ask about:

  • the monthly software fee for each site
  • transaction or commission fees per order
  • hardware, meaning POS terminals, kiosks and kitchen screens
  • the cost of integrating with whatever you already use
  • onboarding fees and which support tier you're actually getting

With Hungrrr, you also need to add the cost of the separate POS and the integration between the two, because you'll be paying for those whether they're on Hungrrr's invoice or not. A group that takes POS, ordering and kiosks from Flipdish is often paying less in total than it would to three separate vendors. Line the quotes up properly before you decide which one is cheaper.

Who Hungrrr suits

Smaller hospitality businesses, mainly pubs, hotels and leisure venues, that want branded web and app ordering and don't want to change anything else. If you've already got a POS you like and you're locked into it, Hungrrr can sit on top as the ordering front-end. That's a legitimate use. It's just a narrow one.

Who Flipdish suits

  • restaurants and takeaways that want ordering, POS and the kitchen in one system
  • QSRs and fast-casual operators putting in kiosks
  • groups with several sites that want one menu and one set of reports
  • anyone who wants AI answering the phone and running customer marketing
  • franchises that need control at both site level and group level

Verdict

For most restaurants and takeaways weighing these two up, Flipdish is the better buy. It covers more of what you need, it connects online orders to the POS and the kitchen without a middleman, and it has AI tools Hungrrr doesn't.

Hungrrr makes sense for a hotel bar or a leisure venue where food ordering is a side job and the POS question has already been settled. If food is the business, and you want one system from the first tap on the app to the plate going out and the customer coming back next week, go with Flipdish.
